Last week I spoke to local democracy reporter Joe Locker on the subject of S106 contributions, which is the money that developers pay towards the services their house buyers will eventually need. Joe’s article can be found here.

My contribution was published in part, with the rest of my statement as follows:

“What I see as a huge problem with s106 money is the length of time between when the sums are calculated, and when they are eventually spent. This is especially problematic as we’ve just gone through a period of high inflation.

For example £500,000 pounds for a community hub in 2014 that is delivered in 2024 would only now be worth the equivalent of £375,000 in today’s money. Which would be bad enough, but you also need to factor in the uplift in property values. The same £500,000 community hub from 2014 would now cost you £766,000 to construct. Because of a ten year delay the community will now have to make do with something that is half as good as they were promised. Ten years isn’t unusual, or even particularly long in planning terms. After twenty years what has grandly been called a community centre might well be delivered as barely more than a scout hut.

In the same period these same factors work the other way in favour for the developers who are building and selling houses that are worth more and more for each year they delay.

It seems in law that planners can link sums payable to inflation, but this isn’t something that we see regularly, and it’s communities who are missing out.”

The Trent has burst its banks. Roads are closed. Houses have had to be evacuated. Friends and family from outside Nottinghamshire are ringing to check that we are alright. We have been flooded before, but these extreme weather conditions are becoming the new normal. The effects of climate change are ever more obvious. We can and need to do more to deal with it.

Nottingham Green Party Chair Ben Gray says:

“The Green Party have detailed plans to tackle the realities of climate change, including simple things such as properly funding emergency responses and stopping new building on flood plains.”

“Even more importantly, the Greens are the only party committed to tackling the causes of flooding. We need to end the system that keeps hurting our environment and build a better alternative.”

So, what next? Record-breaking summer heatwave?

Paul Sergent for Gedling

The Nottingham Green Party are proud to announce Paul Sergent as our candidate for the Gedling ward by-election to Gedling Borough Council taking place on Thursday 26th May.

Paul, who lives locally in the ward on Vernon Avenue, is currently retired after having worked in social care for 20 years. He is also a volunteer for the Gedling House Woods nature reserve.

Paul says, “If elected, I will push for the introduction of sensibly-planned Low Traffic Neighbourhoods in Gedling to cut air pollution and encourage better transport. I will also emphasise more protection of our local environment”.

On 26th May, vote for Paul Sergent to elect a Green councillor that will work hard for local people and put equality and the environment before greed and profit.

The 12th December 2019 general election campaign is underway, and Nottingham Green Party is fielding the only candidates prepared to take real action on climate change in Nottingham East, Nottingham North, Nottingham South, and Gedling.

Michelle VaccianaCath SutherlandGuy Jones and Jim Norris are campaigning to uphold the bold commitments outlined in our manifesto, including:

  • spending £100 billion per year on a real and comprehensive Green New Deal to radically overhaul our economy and infrastructure towards tackling the climate emergency
  • replacing First Past the Post with a proportional voting system
  • campaigning for the UK’s future within a transformed European Union that fights for social and ecological justice.

The Green Party is the only party you can trust to make the right choices to address the urgent problems we face.

So if you’re wondering whether to vote Green in this election, ask yourself: If not now, then when?

For press or campaign queries for any of our candidates please email contact@nottingham.greenparty.org.uk.

Michelle Vacciana for Nottingham East

As a resident of Nottingham East, I have put myself forward as a Green Party candidate because they truly represent the values that I care so much about.

I feel very passionately about the communities where I live and work so when the opportunity unexpectedly arose to do more, I immediately put myself forwards.

Over the past 15 years I have worked consistently in local secondary education; mentoring and offering learning support to pupils who may be finding school life difficult. I feel strongly about the power of creativity and alongside my own creative output have delivered a range of art projects in schools and with different community groups. I am also coming to the end of a 6-year voluntary role as a trustee, which was a new experience and one where I learned much that I can take forwards with me.

I do not come from a political background, which makes this new challenge of standing as a Parliamentary Candidate an even greater one for me but I care very much for others so when the opportunity arose to step forwards and represent the Green Party and my communities of Nottingham East, I didn’t hesitate.

Cath Sutherland for Nottingham South

I have had an ordinary life, working in various jobs, caring for the family. Now I can pursue my lifelong interest in politics. I have always been active in campaign groups and local organisations, such as Greenpeace, Anti-Nazi League and Campaign Against the Cuts in Education.

My employment was in fundraising for the last 15 years or so, for Nottingham Trent Uni, Wiildlife Trusts, Childhealth Advocacy International and Age Concern Nottingham and Notts. Before that I taught/lectured in Economics at colleges of Further Education in Nottingham, and Nottingham Trent Uni. I have also worked in a London local authority and done lots of temporary jobs, including several jobs on farms.

For the last 13 years I have been a self-employed Humanist Celebrant conducting non-religious funerals, weddings and naming ceremonies.

Guy Jones for Nottingham North

This election is one of the most important elections that we will ever have a vote in.

That is not because it is a Brexit election.

It is because it is one of the few remaining elections where it will be possible to put the environment on the agenda, while there is still time to make a difference.

Only a vote for the Green Party can do this.

I first became involved in the Nottingham Green Party in 1989.

I have stood for election for the City Council, County Council, European Parliament and in 1992 became the first Green Party candidate for a parliamentary constituency in the City of Nottingham, when I stood for Nottingham East.

I was chair of the local party when it held the balance of power in Nottingham City Council in the early 1990s and am the current Chair of Nottingham Green Party.

Jim Norris for Gedling

Winter 2019. Looking forward to going into hibernation with some good books.

But somehow I am standing for the Green Party in a General Election. Why would I be doing such a thing at my age (71)?

It’s because I am frightened and angry. And because I still care a lot. I am frightened because I look at my little grandchildren and worry about the legacy we are imposing on them. I imagine the dreadful things they are likely to witness in their lifetimes.

I am angry because we are a planetary crisis and our leaders don’t see it. Worse, they have twigged that there might be some votes in it and have learned a few jargon words.

I am proud to be a member of the ONLY political party that already has a a set of policies and actions specifically aimed at addressing the totality of the oncoming catastrophes.

And I care enough to go out into the cold and wet (wettest Nottingham autumn ever) and give the citizens of Gedling the option of voting for our cause.

As the Green Wave sweeps through the country, Nottingham Green Party is celebrating a successful local election for 2019, holding our two seats in Rushcliffe and increasing our vote share across all three councils we represent.

Sue and Richard Mallender were both re-elected on May 2nd as representatives for Lady Bay on Rushcliffe Borough Council, with 35% and 33% of the vote respectively. This is up from 25% each in the last local election in 2015. It’s clear that the hard work of Green councillors like Sue and Richard really does pay off at the ballot box and that constituents support the work they have put in for the ward and in pushing the entire council forwards, particularly in terms of environmental issues.

Months of campaigning work in Mapperley ward in Nottingham City pulled our candidates into a strong second place. Catherine Wakeman took 10% of votes, Neil Barrett got 8% and Jonathan Walker received 7%, putting us firmly ahead of the Conservatives and miles in front of the Liberal Democrats despite their national resurgence. Having only stood a single candidate in Mapperley in 2015 it is a huge achievement to have moved so far in a single election cycle.

In Ruddington ward of Rushcliffe Borough Council, Chandler WilsonMatthew Sisson and Ian Wilson upped the Green Party’s share of the vote in an area that hasn’t traditionally been Green leaning. Taking 28% of votes between them, in Ruddington we were only around 200 votes behind the winning Labour councillors in what was an incredibly tight race.

Nationally, the Green Party saw its best ever local election results, and this put us in a great position for the European elections on May 23rd. With our strong pro-Europe position and our radical stance on climate action – and without the obstacle of the first-past-the-post voting system – we came the closest we had ever come to electing a Green MEP in the East Midlands, with 10.53% of the vote, and electing 7 MEPS across the other regions of England.

We will continue to build on this success in the years to come. To be part of it, join the Green Party today.
