July update. PDF Print E-mail

Welcome to the Green Party July update.

It is early in the month, but for an important reason, for it gives notice
that nominations for the party executive, including the leader and deputy
leader or co-leaders, are now open.

This is also a reminder that the bookings for autumn conference arenow open – and the early bird bookers get the worm, or at least the 25% discount. And there's a Green Party trade union conference, a host of elections to work on, and much more... Over the next month you can keep in touch with what’s happening on the national website (http://www.greenparty.org.uk) and through the members’ website (http://members.greenparty.org.uk) – please contact me if you need the password. Also look out for the Green World members' magazine and Green Activist newsletter, coming through your letterbox this month.

If you have any questions about anything here, please get in contact and I’ll try to answer them.

Regards, Natalie Bennett, Green Party Internal Communications Coordinator, internalcommunications@greenparty.org.uk

1. GREEN PARTY EXECUTIVE ELECTIONS, INCLUDING FOR LEADER/DEPUTY LEADER OR
CO-LEADERS

A. NOMINATIONS: Nominations for election to the Green Party executive (and
this includes the new Leader/Deputy or Co-Leaders) opened on 1 July and
will close on 24 July. Nomination papers and campaign rules are available
from the Standing Orders Committee Convenor (soc@greenparty.org.uk), the
Green Party's Head of Office, Jon Nott, or available for download from the
members' website (see under SOC pages or link on the front page).

B. PROCEDURE: For each post on the executive for which two or more valid
nominations are received, a postal ballot will be held. There'll be the
chance for votes to be handed in at conference, at which hustings will be
held before the ballot closes. If only one, or no, nomination is received
for a post, nominations will reopen at conference and a vote held there.

C. IMPORTANT NOTE: All candidates will be provided with members' contact
information to be used in strict accordance with the rules for internal
campaigning in the Green Party Executive elections. Members who do not wish
to be contacted directly by candidates can opt out of the internal
campaign, by contacting the Head of Office by email or in writing
(jon.nott@greenparty.org.uk or Jon Nott, Head of Office, The Green Party,
1A Waterlow Road, London N19 5NJ). If you opt out of internal campaigning,
you will still receive a ballot paper and the booklet of candidate
statements.

2. AUTUMN CONFERENCE IN LONDON

A. JOIN THE EARLY BIRDS: Remember to block out in your diary Friday 5th
September to Monday 8th September 2008– the Autumn Party conference. For
the first time in more than a decade, is in London, and the prestigious
venue of the School of Oriental & African Studies, the perfect place to
match the Green Party's rising status. It is one conference not to be
missed – whether it is your first or your umpteenth. Tony Juniper,
Frances O’Grady, Ken Livingstone and Jeremy Leggett are all now confirmed
as speakers; in addition there'll be scintillating policy debates, lots of
campaigning tips to pick up, and plenty of good cheer. Pre-bookers receive
a 25% discount compared to paying on the day and you can pre-book using the
booking form at www.greenparty.org.uk/nextconference. Bookings are open
now! Information about crash space, creche, stall and fringe bookings can
also be found on the booking form.

B. Conference committee says: The main and most important event at
Conference will be the keynote speech from the Green Party’s
newly-elected Leader or Co-Leader on Saturday after lunch, with a Deputy
Leader’s or co-leader’s speech on Monday. The timing of Conference has
changed this year due to constitutional changes, and so Monday is now a
full day, so do please remember to make your plans accordingly, and make
sure you take the whole of Monday off work so as to not to miss the
conclusion of conference. For those who can only make it on one day, Monday
has a one-off half price discount.

C. SECOND AGENDA DEADLINE: If you want to propose an amendment to any item
in the first agenda for the conference (which can be found on the members'
website), it must reach the Standing Orders Committee,
soc@greenparty.org.uk by midnight on Thursday, July 24. (And if you would
like to run a fringe at conference, you need to contact John Street

July, as spaces are filling up quickly.)

6. 24th JULY TARGET WARD BY-ELECTION IN MID SUSSEX

Chris Rose, National Election Agent, writes: There's a by-election in our
Hurstpierpoint and Downs target Ward of Mid Sussex District, a Council on
which we have yet to win representation. Mike Airey, our 2007 candidate
will be standing again. There's a realistic chance we can at least get into
second place and be able to present ourselves as the main challengers here
in 2011. The Brighton and Hove party will be giving practical assistance.
The location is within walking distance from Hassocks station on the
London-Brighton main line. Offers of help to Mike Airey on 01273 857985
(or, if not available, Paul Brown 01342 811866).

10. NEXT UPDATE
There will be a special email update before the end of this month, with
news of the candidates for the executive, the latest on conference plans,
and much more.

FINALLY....

A joke to reward those who've read to the end (if you've got a suggestion
for one for next time, please drop me a line):
Two campers put up their tent and go to sleep.
A few hours later the one wakes up the other and says: Look up at the sky,
what do you see?
Camper 2 says: I see a million stars.
Camper 1: And what does that tell you?
Camper 2: Well, astronomically it tells me that there are millions of
undiscovered worlds and planets out there! Astrologically it tells me that
Saturn is in the sign of the lion! Meteorologically it tells me that we
will have a very nice day tomorrow! Timewise it tells me that it's about
3.15 am! Theologically it tells me that that God is almighty and we are
unworthy! And what does it tell you?
Camper 1 is quiet for a moment and then says: Well, practically it tells me
that someone has nicked our tent...
