The city council, not content with proposals to shut down Noel Street Baths (they are proposing to build a new swimming pool at the Djanogly City Academy) are now threatening Victoria Baths with closure. Coun David Trimble [culture, leisure, and community] presented a report to recommend closure of the facilities supported by Councillor Jon Collins, Leader of the Labour group. Essentially, the city's case is that the building is well past its 'sell by' date [being over 150 years old], and that it is a case of spending increasingly larger amounts of cash on the upkeep of the building.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
1. On Saturday 1 March 2008 at 11.30am in Market Square. People will congregate outside the Council House in Market Square to march to the Victoria Leisure Centre, where a public meeting will be held.
2. I would urge everyone to join the campaign to save these beautiful baths and sign the petition to save them: http://www.savevict
In 2012 the U.K will be hosting the Olympics yet more and more of us have less and less access to proper sporting facilities. (7.5 million londoners share 131 publicly run swimming and athletic facilities). The department of health estimates that by 2010 more than 12 million adults and children will be classed as obese. |
