The Green Standard, PDF Print E-mail

You might have heard on the news today about an initiative launched by environmentally based charities called the Green Standard, http://www.thegreen standard. org.uk/

While we welcome the move by these groups to raise awareness of green issues we were extremely disappointed, to put it mildly, that they failed to engage with the Green Party and have concentrated their efforts solely on the three main Westminster parties.

I'd like to assure you that this was not down to lack of effort on our part.  To quote from their reply which I received just two days ago:

"There are obviously a large number of other parties seeking electoral
support, most importantly from this perspective the Green Party.  But
we have felt that it is both practical and appropriate to limit our
assessment to parties with significant electoral support and
representation in the Westminster Parliament.  We are lobbying the
three main parties on the issues covered by the Green Standard and our
report will be an assessment of their progress, not of the options
available to the electorate at election time.  Neither the devolved
parties with Westminster representation nor other parties, such as
yourself, with representation at the European and the devolved levels
have been included."

We feel this is a short-sighted move, not reflecting the widespread range of votes cast in local, national, devolved and european elections.  Will shall continue to press for the inclusion of the Green Party in the Green Standard.
